Cow's milk is used usually at day centers in Brazil, but the average amount of mil intake is very low, based on low intake and milk intolerance. Goats milk is indicated for these children in order to reduce symptoms. Aiming to establish goat milk acceptance and tolerance we studied 170 children 1-6 years old, in 3 day care centers in São Paulo, Brazil, for 4 months. The first group (n=66) received goat milk powdered, with folic acid and lecithin; the second (n=49) received goat milk - UHT, with iron and vitamins; and third (=55) cow's milk as control. Dairy intake and clinical symptoms were evaluated, and anthropometric (z score) and Hemoglobin levels. General consume of goat milk was higher than cow's milk during all study, showing almost 100% of the offered amount, against 55% for cow's milk, Hemoglobin levels increased significantly for both milk groups after intervention, with anaemia reduction. No modification was see at control group. No diarrhoea, vomiting or other symptoms were seen during study. Total acceptance for goat milk was higher and constant throughout study, showing better tolerance and intake, specially in groups with a background of poor acceptance milk. |
